Hundreds of fans of megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Tuesday held a mahayagna praying for the fast recovery and long life of their idol undergoing treatment in Mumbai's Leelawati Hospital.

The mood was sombre at the south Kolkata venue of the yagna where priests chanted mantras in front of a holy fire as admirers of the star of the millennium prayed for his recovery.

regularly monitored television bulletins throughout the day to find out how 'Big B' was doing.

"Thank god, he is out of danger," said Raju Prasad, a member of Amitabh Bachchan's Fans Association.

"We have organised the yagna for the long life of Amitabh Bachchan. We wish that he recovers from his ailment fast and resume his film career with full vigour," Prasad said.

A few of the fans prayed for his recovery at the famous Kalighat temple last evening after news of his admission to the Mumbai hospital trickled in.
