Farewell to arms

United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) cadres laid down arms on Wednesday. Around 568 militants, including 22 women, surrendered at a formal ceremony at Assam’s Karbi Anglong district headquarters.

568 militants surrender
United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) cadres laid down arms on Wednesday. Around 568 militants, including 22 women, surrendered at a formal ceremony at Assam’s Karbi Anglong district headquarters.

Arms and ammunition
The deposited cache include 177 rifles, one universal machine guns, 18 9-mm pistols and 322 magazines, 1,173 rounds of AK series rifles bullets, 631 bullets, four G3 mortars and one G4 mortar. Rocket launchers were also deposited.

Tri-partite accord
The en masse surrender follows a tri-partite accord signed between the UPDS, the state and central governments in November. The accord offered Karbis some political and administrative authority.
