A farmer in Jattari area of Aligarh district died of shock on Monday night after seeing the heavy damage suffered by his crops. Jattari and Tappal areas of the district were hit by intense rains and hailstones on Friday and Saturday.
Ram Prasad,63, of Baluapur village had four sons and his family was dependent on agriculture as their main source of livelihood. When the farmer went to survey his field on Monday, he found that his mustard crop, spread over six bigha, was completely destroyed. Upset, he returned home and later complained of chest pain. He was rushed to a private doctor but could not recover and died at night.
In the morning, Ram Prasad’s family performed his last rites after informing district officials.
In this matter, SDM (Khair) Vimal Kumar Agarwal told HT, “If such an incident has taken place then after an inquiry is conducted the family will be extended all the help under the rules.”
Farmers are distraught because of the large-scale crop damage by the sudden change in weather witnessed over the last few days. While the wheat crop has been flattened, potato and other rabi crops have also been badly affected. The heaviest losses have occurred in Chandaus, Jawan and parts of Atrauli. Wheat crop has been destroyed in Gabhana and Khair areas also.
The agriculture department has begun surveying the losses incurred due to recent unseasonal rains, hailstones and high velocity winds. Deputy agriculture director, Rohtash Kumar said, “Chandaus, adjoining Jawan block and parts of Atrauli have suffered the heaviest crop loss, with wheat crop getting completely flattened. The same situation has also been observed in Khair and Gabhana. We are conducting a survey of losses in different areas of the district. Potato and some other crops have been saved.” ADM (finance & revenue) Dr VK Singh said, “An analysis of the losses is being undertaken. After the report is received, the loss percentage will be calculated.”

BJP leader and former block pramukh, Shashi Singh, has submitted a memorandum to the DM, demanding a survey of losses to crops of vegetables, mustard, grams and peas. RLD leader, Dalveer Singh also met the DM and said, “Farmers of Aligarh have been suffering losses for 2 years. After the recent rain and hailstorm they must be compensated, he said.
