He was addressing a Kishan Gosthi being organised as part of the State Government-sponsored Krishi Unnayan Pakhwada (May 15 to 31) in Badagaon development block here. The ADO asked the farmers to prepare compost and vermi compost, which will enrich the humus content in soil.

“Humic, at the rate of 3 ml per kg of paddy seed treatment, will enhance germination and root proliferation,” he said. He emphasised on sowing of pigeonpea and maize to ensure optimum plant stand in heavy rainfall. “The wilt and root rot diseases can be effectively reduced by crop rotation and seed treatment with trichoderma viride at the rate of four to five gram per kilogram of seed,” he said.

Pawan Singh of the Agriculture Insurance Corporation of India Limited told farmers about the Varsha Bima-2006 scheme, in which farmers can pay a premium of Rs 360 and Rs 1,094 per hectare for insurance of their paddy crop in the nursery and for the entire crop season up to October 31, 2006, respectively.

He said the premium had to be paid by June 30, 2006. “The scheme aims to give an insurance coverage to farmers in case of low rainfall,” he said.

Multiplex Bio-Tech Private Limited development officer Dr Nitin Joshi emphasised on the use of biofertilisers to improve the status of nutrients in the soil.

"Actually, the indiscriminate use of urea and DAP has not only increased the cost of cultivation, but also made the soil almost barren,” he said.
