Despite various efforts touted by the government, a stress-free education system still seems a long way off. Late on Friday, a bright 16-year-old student committed suicide in Gopiganj area of Bhadohi district in Uttar Pradesh.

Shama Parveen, 16, hanged herself with a dupatta at her home, as she was upset over her performance in Class X Math exam.
It wasn’t that Parveen feared that she would flunk, because friends and family say she was a topper throughout.
A suicide note written in Hindi was recovered from the room. It said, “My Sir had said I have to top in the district, but I messed up the very first exam. I will either flunk or will not be able to top in the district, so I am taking my life. Please do not hold my teacher responsible for my death.”
Parveen ended the note saying, “Mummy-Papa I am sorry.”
While none of the family members spoke to journalists, neighbour Mustafa Ahmad told HT, “The incident is shocking for us, as Shama was a role model for other children in the locality.”
According to police, on Saturday morning when Shama, a carpet weaver’s daughter, did not come out of her room, her parents went in to check and found her body hanging from the ceiling.
