With general elections round the corner, social organisation Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) plans to unveil a charter of demands.
It is also working at creating pressure groups to force political parties into fielding candidates with a clean record.
For the purpose, AGNI will network with various non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) and citizen groups.
It also hopes to create a block of at least 15,000 citizens who endorse the charter in each constituency.
The charter will be presented to the leaders of the various political parties.
Gerson da Cunha, trustee, AGNI, said political parties should be responsive to these demands of citizens.
“After seeing nearly 15,000 voters, we hope that politicians will now offer us the best of candidates,” said da Cunha. “Even a few hundred votes can change the election result and here we have thousands.”
He added that the charter would have at least 10 demands, chief among these being the criteria for the selection of candidates.
“Parties should choose candidates who have no criminal record or history of communal trouble, who are not more than 50 years in age, have university education and honestly declare their assets and liabilities,” said the Agni trustee.
