A day after Hindustan Times highlighted shoddy police investigation in the Gurgaon BMW accident case, deputy commissioner of police (east) Maheshwar Dayal has asked the special investigation team (SIT) to finalise and file a chargesheet in court by Monday.
Two people — pregnant IBM executive Kshama Chopra, 35, and cab driver Sanjay Gulati — lost their lives in the accident when a BMW car rammed their vehicle on May 5.
Chopra’s parents and husband were critically injured in the crash. Her mother is still in coma three months after the mishap while her father is bedridden.
After media highlighted the case, a seven-member SIT was formed on May 13 to crack the hit-and-run case on the directions of Gurgaon police commissioner KK Sindhu. The team was led by Bhupinder Singh, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of the DLF area.
On Friday, DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal called a hurried meeting of all SIT members and gave them an ultimatum to file the chargesheet in court on Monday.
"After HT's detailed report putting the police in the dock for not filing a chargesheet in the case, which is not a very complicated one, I have instructed the SIT to file the chargesheet by Monday. The police can't be blamed as the accused has been identified and is on bail. Delay in filing the chargesheet does not impact the investigation or trial," DCP Dayal said.

{{/usCountry}}In the hearing held on August 1, the Chopra family was disappointed when the police did not file a chargesheet in court. The next hearing in the case has been fixed on November 8.
“Though the judge was on leave, the police could have completed their work and filed the chargesheet which they failed to do,” said Rakesh Chopra, brother of the deceased.
