Delhi government on Tuesday claimed that the country's first Voter Registration and Electors’ Photo Identity Card Centres (VREC) would be opened in Seemapuri Assembly Segment on Wednesday. The VREC provides round the year service to the citizens for election related work at one place.
Addressing a news conference, Chief Electoral Officer Satbir Silas said 70 such centres – one each for every assembly segment – would be set up in the Capital soon. “Work is in progress for opening centres in all segments wherein the voters can get all work done under a single roof,” she said.
The services which the people can avail of in these centres include, inclusion of names in the electoral roll, correction of the existing incorrect entry in the electoral roll, transposition of entry from one polling station area to another polling station area in the same electoral roll, preparation and issue of Electors' Photo Identity Card (EPIC), preparation and issue of duplicate EPIC, issue of certificate of entry in the electoral roll and inspection of entries.
“VREC's would be equipped with all facilities and responsible for producing a clean, realistic and truly representative electoral roll of the assembly constituency,” Silas said. Each VREC will be headed by an Assistant Electoral Registration Officer and permanent staff exclusively for election related services.

{{/usCountry}}She said the VREC will be the co-ordination point for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in the assembly constituency and for this purpose, BLO's are being appointed for each of the 9246 polling booths in Delhi. These BLO's act as custodian of the electoral roll would provide the information in respect of the polling booth allotted to them regarding non-existent electors due to death and shifting to other place.
"With these BLOs in all the 70 assembly constituencies in the Capital it would be easy to prepare a clean, defect-free and truly representative photo electoral roll before the next assembly elections in November, 2008,” Silas added .
The Chief Electoral Officer informed that during the recently concluded annual revision exercise, 5.7 lakh applications were received from citizens of Delhi for inclusion/deletion/modification/transposition of names.
