The swine flu has claimed its first victim in the second capital of Maharashtra on Friday when a 63-year old woman suspecting to be suffering from the dreaded disease succumbed to the virus at local government run Medical College and Hospital.
According to Dr Abhimanyu Nishwade, the acting dean of the hospital, the victim - Geetabai Khobragade - a resident of Parvati Nagar in south Nagpur locality, was initially admitted at a private hospital with symptoms of
fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and headache. Later, she was shifted to the Medical College and Hospital in a critical state on Wednesday where she died on Thursday morning.
"We suspected that it was a case of swine flu," Dr Nishwade said and informed that her saliva and blood samples had been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune on Thursday, and the reports were awaited.
Meanwhile, no new patients were found positive in the city on Friday, he added.
At least 23 people in the city were tested positive for the H1N1 virus so far.
Almost all the patients who tested positive for swine flu are migrants from Pune. The suspected first victim of swine flu, Geetabai, is, however, from a slum in south Nagpur.
