THE ISSUE of violence in Gandhi Medical College that has seen day scholar students of first, second and third-year MBBS keeping out of college campus, allegedly owing to threat from hostellers, has taken toll of the academic progress of the first-year day scholar students, as about 27 such students are not able to attend the Part Completion Test (PCT) that is currently on at the college.
The students stand to lose 2.5 per cent marks on their final results for not being able to appear for the exams apart from getting bad academic ratings right in first year. The PCT make for five per cent marks in the internal assessment of the students and go on to affect 2.5 pc marks in final results.
The day scholar students of MBBS I, II and III are not able to attend classes since last about 20 days after a series of violent eruptions between hostellers and day scholars. The day scholars have alleged that the hostellers have threatened them with dire consequences if they entered the college campus and as they have no particular assurance from the college administration regarding their security, they do not dare go to college.
On Wednesday a section of parents of day scholars met the dean of college Dr M K Saraswat on the issue but were reportedly given no particular assurance. The dean could not be contacted despite several efforts. Meanwhile, the meeting of the disciplinary committee of the college was also held after the anti-ragging sub-committee submitted its report along with several recommendations on ways of preventing ragging. But there was no information on the decisions taken in the meeting, as none of the senior officials were available for comments.
