The incident occurred in a residential area in the Airwa Katra town in Auraiya district when a group of jubilant cricket fans burst crackers close to a fireworks shop soon after Dhoni's innings. The sparks from the crackers set the entire shop on fire leading to a major explosion.

According to Auraiya Additional Superintendent of Police S Bharadwaj, "The whole cracker shop went up in flames, leaving five persons completely charred."

"The young boy who had burst the crackers in excitement died on the spot, together with four others, including the cracker shop owner," Bharadwaj said.

Three of the victims were said to be the sole breadwinners for their families.
