A day after Jet Airways began charging Rs 50 from fliers asking e-ticket printouts at airports, thousands of passengers slammed the move especially on the airline's social media platforms. On Wednesday, the domestic carrier’s Facebook page and Twitter handle was flooded with comments condemning the initiative. For instance, Nimish Gupta, a passenger, wrote, “Waiting to pay Rs 100 for a leak and Rs 250 for a dump,” on the airlines Facebook page.
Arindam Mukherjee, another passenger, suggested that if the airline outsourced the job of issuing e-ticket printouts to him, he would be willing to do it for just Rs 20.
“This way the airline can make money, support the environment and passengers would not feel the pinch," he wrote.
The avalanche of angry comments made the airline post a detailed explanation defending the move.
The airline claimed that it was forced to deploy dedicated manpower and infrastructure for people seeking e-tickets prints. The statement added that last minute pressure of giving printouts caused inconvenience to passengers buying tickets from the airline's airport counters.
"We are working together with various stakeholders to provide seamless travel using mobile or bar code technology which will do away with e-ticket prints. We look forward to its implementation following regulatory approvals," said a Jet Airways spokesperson.
The move has affected several passengers because Jet Airways and its low cost subsidiary Jetlite cater to more than one-fourth of the domestic passengers in India.
