Flood situation on Tuesday worsened in Assam and West Bengal with rain-fed rivers inundating fresh areas, rendering thousands of people homeless and claiming one life even as army was put on stand by in Jalpaigui district.
Brahmaputra and its tributaries maintained a rising trend in most of the 19 affected districts of Assam rendering thousands of people homeless, official sources said.
One person drowned in Goalpara district of Assam taking the toll in the current round of floods in the state to 13, they said.
The situation in worst-hit Dhemaji remained critical with water levels of Jiadhol and Gainadi rivers rising alarmingly. A breach in Brahmaputra dyke at Karengchapori last night submerged 80 villages and affected more than one lakh people, the sources said.
Kaziranga National Park, Nameri National Park and Majuli, the world's largest river island, were also in the grip of the swirling flood waters.
In West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, where 50,000 people were hit by floods, army was put on stand by.
"Red Signal" was flashed all along the course of Teesta river between Domahini to Bangladesh border as two spurs on its embankments were damaged, district officials said.

River Dimdima was flowing over the national highway at Ethelbari and had inundated a number of tea gardens at Hasimara, besides the famous Buxa Tiger Reserve Forest and the Binaguri army cantonment in the West Bengal district.
