About 300 students have been under treatment in hospitals after they had lunch at a primary school in Chongzhou city in Sichuan Province.

The students developed symptoms of headache, fever, vomiting, stomach and laxness since Saturday after having lunch in the Chongzhou City Experimental Primary School on Friday, the first day of the new term for them.

Local officials were quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency that no deaths have been reported.

"There were a few pupils in serious condition and they have been out of danger now," director of the provincial health department, Shen Ji said.

Some students have been discharged from hospital after treatment.

An expert team from Chengdu, the provincial capital, arrived in Chongzhou on Sunday to help with the treatment of the pupils.

About 800 pupils had their lunch in the school on Friday.

The local government promised to pay for the treatment of all the students.
