The fraud was detected by the Bank of India, Mahanagar branch, Lucknow. Pandey, resident of Sitapur Police Lines, claimed to be working with the ICICI DSA (Hazratganj) branch in Lucknow. He got a pay order issued in his name from the Bank of India’s Mahanagar branch. After fraudulently raising the amount, he deposited the pay order in his SBI account in Sitapur.

Since the amount was high, it was sent for collection by the SBI, Sitapur, to the Bank of India, Lucknow. When Bank of India officials found that the pay order was tampered with, they held back the payment and intimated the SBI Sitapur through the Bank of India’s Sitapur branch. They also intimated the Mahanagar police station on March 9. When Pandey went to the bank to withdraw money on Saturday, he was detained by the SBI manager and handed over to the police.

The Mahanagar police station officer said since the pay order was deposited with the SBI’s Sitapur branch, an FIR was not registered here. He made it clear that it was the responsibility of the Sitapur police to lodge an FIR. However, the SBI manager here said the pay order was issued in Lucknow, it was not clear whether Sitapur police could deal with the case.

SP Daba Sherpa said the FIR should have been lodged in Lucknow and assured that he would take up the matter with the Lucknow Police.0
