In the second major narcotics seizure in the city this year, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) seized 5 kg of heroin on Sunday. Four inter-state smugglers were arrested for allegedly trying to push the contraband consignment.
In January, the police had seized over 39 kg of heroin and arrested IPS officer Saji Mohan and two alleged accomplices.
Inspector Anil Jadhav of the ANC said on Sunday that last week the police were tipped off about a drug dealing in south Mumbai. On Friday, the watch surveillance zeroed in on four people who were moving suspiciously near Maharashtra College in the Nagpada area.
Jadhav said while Dinesh Kumar Vishwakarma, Navinkishore Rathod and Sitaram Patidar were from Rajasthan, the fourth suspect, Mansingh Rajput is from Madhya Pradesh.
The consignment originated from the narcotics producing districts of MP—Ratlam and Mandsaur — and was smuggled into Mumbai through Bhawani Mandi railway station in Rajasthan. The contraband is worth around Rs 1 crore in international market.
Jadhav said the four appeared to be old timers in the trade, though their exact number of trips to the city is not known. The consignment was to be handed over to their Mumbai distributors, Jadhav said. The police picked up one of the local distributors on Sunday, though Jadhav refused to disclose his name.

{{/usCountry}}In another month-long operation, the ANC busted a charas racket by arresting two main suppliers from J&K. A total of 77 kg charas, valued at Rs 7.7 crore in international market was seized and led to the arrest of 10 peddlers from Mumbai, Jadhav added.
