Four jail officials were suspended after three inmates, including a murder convict, escaped from a sub-jail at Vasco near Panaji by drilling a hole in the toilet in the wee hours on Wednesday, Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said.
Responding to the issue raised by BJP legislator Milind Naik in the Legislative Assembly, Kamat said four officials have been suspended pending inquiry against them.
Assistant Jailors -- Uday Shirodkar, who was guarding the cell throughout night, and Manuel Travasso -- and two jail guards Vasudeo Pednekar and Dilip Gulelkar, were suspended this morning, jail authorities said.
Three inmates -– Hitler Fernandes, Seby Ferrao and Abhijit Patil -- escaped from the Sada Sub Jail, located 40 kms from here, by drilling a hole in the prison toilet, they said.
"We noticed the jail break after 3 a.m. today. They escaped by drilling a hole in the toilet," Levinson Martins, deputy collector, in-charge of Sada Jail, told PTI.
Vasco police has been informed about the incident and it has launched a search operation to nab the accused, he said.
While Hitler was convicted for double murder, Seby is facing trial for robbery and Abhijit for killing his ex-girlfriend in Margao town. Hitler and Seby have a previous history of jail breaks, the authorities said.
Hitler (46), sentenced for life in a murder case, had earlier also escaped from the Sada sub-jail two years ago and killed another woman at Joida in Karnataka's Karwar district before being nabbed again.
Seby was amongst the 12 inmates who had escaped from Margao sub jail in 2008 when lockups were opened for customary 'puja' in the jail.
Third accused, Abhijit, was arrested for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death at Margao bus stand, this year.
