"Four accused have been arrested in the incident of sacrilege in Phoond belt and stone pelting in Kathua district," district development commissioner (DDC), Kathua, Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary said.

He said a thorough probe in the incident will be held and culprits will be punished.

On July 28, mob went on a rampage setting afire kiosks and damaging property as communal clashes, sparked by an alleged act of sacrilege, erupted in Kathua, prompting authorities to call out Army.

There were reports of an incident of cow slaughter by some miscreants in Janu village in the district, officials said.

The DDC visited tehsil Basohli and convened a meeting with the prominent citizens at Ramleela Ground here.

He appealed to the protesters to call off the strike and asked the citizens to maintain harmony and peace in the area and have faith in the administration.

He also urged the people not to fall prey to any rumours.
