The shootout took place in the Cherpal forest area in Dantewada district, 418 km south of Raipur when troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire on a group of heavily armed Maoist rebels.

"The rebels had planned to attack the Cherpal police station but luckily the CRPF were able to repulse the attack. Four bullet-ridden bodies were recovered," said OP Rathor, director general of Chhattisgarh Police.

Many rebels received multiple bullet wounds but they escaped deep inside the forest.
