Games show India’s ambitions have overshot its abilities
With reference to Pankaj Vohra’s article A rabbit out of the hat? Maybe (Between Us, September 27), as long as India doesn’t have enough competent officials to oversee the preparations of international events, we shouldn’t offer to host them. There is no harm in admitting one’s limitations. Giving false assurances of staging a world-class event to the participating nations in the upcoming Commonwealth Games has done a lot of damage to our reputation. The culprits shouldn’t be allowed to get away scot-free.

It’s true that all that could have gone wrong in the Games preparations has gone wrong. But it’s also true that the media are going overboard in their coverage of the events. The main culprit is the electronic media, which, to push up their TRPs, are sensationalising every Games-related news story.

Compete fair and square
With reference to the report How AIIMS, JNU keep out deserving OBCs (September 27), if students from the reserved categories are capable of scoring more than their counterparts in the general category, then why do they need reservation? Their demand for reservation in prestigious educational institutions deprives deserving students of options.
