Ganesh Chathurthi processions in the district were marred by violence and protest, leading to a police lathicharge in one area where one person was injured, police said on Monday.
Seventy workers of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) were arrested on Monday for blocking the Vinayaka idol procession route at Behampur in this town, they said.
The procession from Paraipatti was taken out under heavy police escort when TMMK volunteers blocked the road and demanded the procession be diverted through some other route.
As efforts to persuade the volunteers failed, they were arrested and the way was cleared for the procession to pass through, police said.
Meanwhile, about 150 TMMK volunteers blocked the Dindigul main highway on Monday, demanding the release of those arrested.
Nine persons, including three policemen, were injured in the stone pelting incident twice on Sunday night by some persons at a Vinayaka idol procession in Yousiffiar Nagar.
Hindu Munnani volunteers blocked vehicular traffic till 11 pm on Sunday night demanding the arrest of the culprits.
Police assured them that action would be taken and suggested that the procession be taken out around midnight.

In a separate incident at OddanChattiram near Dindigul, some persons pelted stones at the Vinayaka procession around midnight, leading to a lathicharge by police in which the local chamber of commerce vice president Subramani was injured.
