Former India pacer S Sreesanth and others arrested in the spot-fixing scandal face a bleak future after the Delhi police special cell slapped stringent provisions against them on Tuesday normally aimed at crime syndicates.A Delhi court denied bail for Sreesanth and two other suspended Rajasthan Royals team mates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — out on bail to get married — after the police said it was invoking provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) as it had "sufficient technical evidence" that the underworld controlled the illegal betting in the T20 league. Enacted in 1999, MCOCA is used to try gangsters, particularly the Mumbai underworld. It was extended to Delhi in 2002.
The Delhi police arrested 26 suspects, mostly illegal bookies. Two other prime characters in the fixing saga walked free. A Mumbai court granted bail to CSK official and cricket board president, N Srinivasan’s son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, and Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh, in addition to six bookies.
Meiyappan, arrested by the Mumbai crime branch, is accused of passing inside information to Vindoo. The Mumbai court granted bail on a personal bond of Rs. 25,000 each. It has directed the accused not to leave the country and to report before the police every alternate day. Meiyappan and others sought bail on Monday after being remanded to judicial custody by the magistrate court, arguing that the offences were bailable.
