Gay, 28, yesterday improved on the 9.89 run by Jamaican training partner Steve Mullings in May.

The American also pipped the 9.80sec that Mullings delivered in winning the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, a few hours later for the year's fastest run at the track to date.

Gay posted his time in a heat in the National Training Center Sprint Series and did not compete in the final, results showed. He had a legal wind of 1.1 m/sec for the run.

Gay battled injuries after winning the 100m and 200m world titles in Osaka in 2007.

He missed out on the Olympic final in Beijing the following year and pulled out of the 200m after taking 100m silver at the World Championships in Berlin two years ago.

However, he was unbeaten at 100m last year, including a victory over world record-holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica in their only face-to-face meeting.
