Just days after the second split in the Hurriyat Conference, hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has transferred all his properties to a trust. The move is aimed at bringing accountability and transparency in the political landscape, particularly among the separatist camp.
The decision was made public through a press release by the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.
“It has remained a tragedy of Kashmir that its leaders have not been held accountable and nobody has questioned their conduct,” Geelani said in a statement.
According to a spokesman, the ailing Hurriyat (G) leader on Saturday announced the transfer of his entire immovable property to an autonomous and independent trust.
The property includes Geelani’s official Hyderpora residence, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat head office building and Millat Publications.
The move is believed to be aimed at rival separatist Kashmiri leadership, which has been accused of amassing huge assets and properties. Geelani too has been accused of receiving foreign ends through hawala in past, and arrest on these charges as well, but now, by declaring the transfer, Geelani wants to clear the air.
“I want my person and my party to stay transparent in our dealings with the society. The trust comprises of eight people who have been authorised to use the said property for the purposes of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. Nobody has any claims to anything in these properties,” the statement said.
