A fast track court on Tuesday sentenced a man accused of planning terror activities in the country to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment.
Fayaz Ahmed Mir, 27, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad on August 12, 2008, from near Ghaziabad railway station for carrying arms, RDX, explosives, forged documents and fake passports and was also accused of planning disruptive activities.
On Tuesday, Ahmed, a native of the Listiyar area of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, was awarded several sentences under under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Explosives Act and the Foreigners Act.
"He was also charged under various sections (121, 122, 123 of IPC) for collecting and concealing arms with an intent to wage war against the country but was acquitted of these charges," said additional district government counsel Mithlesh Shukla.
However, Mir denied the charges against him and said he had been framed by the ATS. He said he was picked up from the international airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, on August 4, 2008 — eight days before his 'official' arrest in Ghaziabad.
"I am not a terrorist and never thought of carrying out such activities in the country. The arms and explosives shown during my arrests were planted," he said.
Mir said he, along with some other youth, had crossed the line of control to reach Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir and had stayed there as a refugee.

{{/usCountry}}"After the state government announced a rehabilitation package in Kashmir, I took a flight to Nepal on a Pakistani passport to return to India. While on my way back, the police picked me up from Nepal and brought me to Ghaziabad in a van," Mir said.
