The 24-year-old woman is a post-graduation student at the Santosh Medical College and has been going through her internship at the college hospital. She said she woke up gagged at approximately 3am as the assailant, identified as a cleaner hired last month, tried to sexually assault her.

Accused Ravi Kumar said he walked along the ledge outside the windows on the sixth floor to gain access to the doctors’ duty room where the victim was asleep.

“I kept a watch over her for the past 5-6 days and got a chance early Monday when she was asleep and the guards had gone down for a cup of tea,” Kumar said while in detention at the police station.

The victim, who lives in Noida, raised an alarm hearing which doctors in nearby room came to her rescue. Kumar apparently fled through the window, but left behind his shirt that ultimately led to his identification.

The medical superintendent of the college, Dr BR Sharma, declined to comment on the issue.
