An 18-year-old woman, arrested in a theft case, was found dead at a local police station here on Saturday. Policemen at the Gate Hakima police station say the girl committed suicide by hanging.

Commissioner Varinder Kumar has suspended the SHO and five others. Joginder Kaur and daughter Sarabjit Kaur were booked for theft at a jewellery shop and were sent to police custody for two days.

A police team, including SHO Sukhwinder Singh, had escorted Joginder Kaur to Maari Mega on Saturday to recover a stolen safe when Sarabjit died, police said. She was detained in the SHO’s room and was found her hanging by her dupatta, they said.

Police Commissioner Varinder Kumar said, “At this point, it looks like suicide, but a judicial probe is on.”
