A young girl in a small village called Serai in Muzaffarnagar district of western Uttar Pradesh was reportedly killed by family members. Her crime: eloping with her lover.

Farzana ran away with her lover on November 6, following which her family members registered an FIR that the girl was missing. On Wednesday, she returned home of her own free will.

That should have been the end of the story but it

wasn’t. Farzana’s father Yaseen suspected one his relatives, Shameem, to have got close to his daughter and had been searching for him. On Thursday, Shameem came to visit the family and was manhandled by them.

When Farzana came to Shameem’s defence, her brother Usmaan allegedly hit her with a sharp-edged weapon, killing her on the spot. He then fled the scene, along with two of his brothers.

The Greater Noida incident was preceded by the Diwali murder of two Haryana girls, who were beaten up and burnt alive by their families. The provocation was that the girls had returned home late escorted by some unidentified men.
