TEACHERS DO not give students time to think and visualise. They do it themselves, leaving nothing to students. This is the main drawback of the Indian education system, said former Director of Academics (CBSE) B Balasubramanian at a seminar organised by Pearson Longman for the teachers of St Joseph’s Co-Ed School on Tuesday.
The seminar titled ‘new trends in curriculum and pedagogy’ was held at the Asha Niketan School for Deaf and Dumb. At the outset resource person Balasubramanian explained the new trends in curriculum and education. His lecture focused on different types of listeners and qualities of a smart teacher.
There are three types of listeners, he said. While some students understand quickly, some take time to grasp what the teacher says. There are some students who find it difficult to understand things, said Balasubramanian. Such students need more attention from the teachers, he added.
He said teachers should have some special qualities that would help them explain things better to students. A smart teacher is one whose body language is good. The body language of the teacher should show that he or she is confident of what he/she is going to teach. Teachers should also be creative and innovative, he said.
Balasubramanian said that teachers should make the students think and visualise. ‘‘Students should not be mere listeners. If the teacher explains everything and leaves nothing to students, they cannot develop or expand their thinking power,’’ he said.

{{/usCountry}}Earlier, St Joseph’s Co-Ed School Principal Fr Maria Stephen introduced Balasubramanian to the teachers. Manager of the school Fr Abraham, headmistress Sr Mercy and head coordinator Sr Julie were also present on the occasion.
