An advocate representing a section of the post-Godhra riot victims in the inquiry commission in Gujarat, has received a letter threatening to kill him and a Mumbai-based social activist.
The letter, received by Mukul Sinha, who is associated with the NGO Jan Sangharsh Manch, was today produced before the two-member Nanavati Commission probing the Godhra train carnage and subsequent communal riots of 2002.
Commission Chairman Justice (retd) G T Nanavati, after going through the letter, asked the Ellisbridge police to investigate the matter.
"I received the letter on January 3," Sinha told PTI.
The letter was received by post at Sinha's office in Ellisbridge locality here. The letter writer threatens the advocate and alleges he was trying to "incite" and "mislead" the people of Gujart on the Godhra issue.
The writer goes on to say that both Sinha and social activist Teesta Setalvad, who runs the Mumbai-based NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace, will be "eliminated".
"Neither the police nor the Gujarat High Court will pay heed to your complaints," the letter states.
The writer has chosen to sign off as Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Sinha today made a formal application to the Commission asking it to conduct an "appropriate investigation into the incident". Since the past five years, Sinha, on behalf of the NGO, has been assisting the commission.
