The march that began on March 12, 1930, was one of the milestones in India's freedom struggle. Gandhi led the march from Sabarmati Asharam near Ahmedabad to Dandi in Gujarat as part of a non-violent protest against the British government’s decision to impose tax on salt. He was joined by thousands, and the march led to a civil disobedience movement.

For Google, it has become a usual practice to produce theme-based doodles on any important day. The I-Day doodle was met with enthusiasm on social media.
