Autopsies of the eight victims of a communal clash in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district four days ago began at the district government hospital on Sunday.
A team of five senior doctors from Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh hospital is conducting the autopsies. However, only one postmortem, that of 40-year-old Iqbal, could be completed on Sunday. The remaining autopsies will be conducted on Monday, doctors said.
The eight people were killed in police firing following violent clashes between Meo Muslims and Gujjars in Gopalgarh on Wednesday over land for a Muslim graveyard. The Gujjars, who claim ownership of the land, are opposed to Meo Muslims using it as a graveyard.
The situation in Gopalgarh remained under control on Sunday and the curfew was relaxed from 11am to 4 pm.
Minister of state for home affairs Bhanwar Jitendra Singh met the bereaved families at the district hospital and assured action against those found guilty.
On Friday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot decided to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. District collector Krishna Kunal and superintendent of police Hinglaj Dan were removed, while the government announced jobs for the kin of those killed.
