Govt assurance on release of water into Ganga

On the basis of the statement of Advocate-General, the Court directed the authorities concerned to increase the water in the Ganga as per the requirement during the Ardh Kumbh.
In addition to it, a Division Bench comprising of Chief Justice AN Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan directed Kanpur Nagar’s District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Jal Sansthan, Nagar Nigam and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and other responsible authorities to ensure that effluents from tanneries could not go in the Ganges without passing through the treatment plant.
The court also directed that the monitoring committee would sit every week to look into the supply of water in the Ganga and other related aspects.
The court passed this order on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Hari Chaitanya Brahmachari Ji Mahraj of Tikar Mafi Math of district Allahabad.
In the PIL, the petitioner had requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to release adequate water in the holy river Ganga during the Ardh Kumbh season, so that pilgrims coming from across the country and abroad may take a holy dip properly in the Ganga, specially during the main bathing days.
The PIL had alleged that there was inadequate and polluted water in the Ganga at Allahabad, which would cause problems to the pilgrims, who would assemble at holy Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati, to have a holy dip during the Ardh Kumbh period, which would last for almost one month.
