Admissions to junior college for the current academic year would be conducted as per the existing procedure with the Bombay High Court on Monday striking down the Maharashtra government's 90:10 reservation formula for admission.
The court struck down the 90:10 formula for admission to junior colleges, ruling it was arbitrary and devoid of merits.
"We will respect the court ruling. Admissions would be conducted as per the existing procedure," Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said in his reaction to the HC ruling.
On the court's observation that the formula was 'politically motivated', Chavan said he did not think so. "The formula was considered on account of the large number of SSC students," he said.
Asked if his government would appeal against the HC ruling, Chavan said "the education minister is out of Mumbai and the issue would be discussed with him on his return."
However, the admissions for this academic year would be conducted as per current procedure, he added.
The court gave its ruling on a bunch of petitions filed by parents of students after the state government came out with a proposal on June 18 to reserve 90 per cent admission in first year junior colleges (11th class) for SSC board students.
