BASIC EDUCATION Minister Prof Kiran Pal Singh said on Friday that the agitation by Shiksha Mitras in the State capital on Teacher’s Day was politically motivated. He hinted that the State Government would take strict action against those found guilty.
Prof Singh was speaking to newspersons after attending the 40th International Literacy Day function organised by the Literacy and Alternative Education Directorate, UP.
On the occasion, Daljit Singh Puri, director of Literacy and Alternative Education Directorate, announced all illiterate gram pradhans of the state would be made literate by October 2.
L Venkateshwar, DM Jhansi and MKS Sundaram, DM, Pratapgarh were felicitated for their brilliant work in improving the literacy rate in their districts. Social worker Raj Narayan Pushpjiwi was also feted for his commitment to the eradication of illiteracy.
Everyone, including the minister and officials of the Basic Education Department, were unanimous that such individual efforts were required to make the total literacy mission a reality.
As head of the district literacy committee, Jhansi, MKS Sundaram, the then DM Jhansi, as well as the present Jhansi DM L Venkateshwar had created a record by making 1.46 lakh people literate. “Jhansi is now aiming for 75 per cent literacy rate. The role of the two DMs in motivating people has been exemplary,” Prof Singh said. The DM’s were given a memento while the district literary committee, Jhansi was given a cash reward of Rs 10,000.
Pushpjiwi, was felicitated for creating awareness about birth control and taking active interest in persuading people to become literate. “It was a tough task. But Pushpjiwi has showed us what will power and determination can achieve,” the minister said.
