Police arrested the infant’s grandmother and uncle on Saturday for killing the baby.

The police said Sheela Lodhi, 55, and Rajesh Lodhi, 35, killed the baby in the early hours of Saturday. The baby girl was born on July 8 and was reportedly ill.

Police said the child’s mother Sudha, 32, was sleeping in one room along with her newborn and mother-in-law Sheela. Her husband Ravinder and brother-in-law Rajesh were sleeping in another room. Around 3.30 in the morning, Sheela and Rajesh quietly strangled the baby while her mother was in deep sleep. Later, they threw the body in a drain.

“The two accused have accepted their crime. Some local residents had also spotted them when they were out early in the morning,” superintendent of police (SP) SS Yadav said.

Sheela, however, told the police that she saw two armed men leaving their house around 4.30am, possibly with the baby.
