Guj HC orders probe against IPS officers for beating up MLA

Gujarat High Court today ordered probe against two senior IPS officers in a 1998 case where a sitting BJP MLA was beaten up by policemen during a protest march against fee hike in schools.

Gujarat High Court on Tuesday ordered probe against two senior IPS officers in a 1998 case where a sitting BJP MLA was beaten up by policemen during a protest march against fee hike in schools.

The order was passed by Justice Bhagwati Prasad while hearing the case of one Yatin Oza, an MLA of the ruling BJP from Sabarmati constituency in 1998, who was beaten up by policemen allegedly under instructions of three IPS officers.

The court has asked an officer of the level not less than Deputy Superintendent of police or an Assistant Commissioner of Police of the state CID to investigate role of two IPS officers Atul Karwal and Satish Verma in the incident.

One other IPS officers who was named in Oza's petition P K Jha has died.

The supervision of the probe would be done by the Additional Director General of Police, CID and report of the investigation should be submitted in court with in three months time.

According to case details, in July 1998 there was protest by people against fee hike by some school in Vadaj area of the city. There was stone-pelting by the crowd in which a police inspector had died.
