Mumbai Police Crime Branch chief Rakesh Maria confirmed that one person has been detained in Bangladesh. He, however, told Hindustan Times that it was yet to be ascertained whether he was the same who murdered the music baron.

The alleged sharpshooter of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was reportedly nabbed from a house at eastern Brahmanbaria in a raid conducted by Dhaka police late on Wednesday night. He was later escorted to New Delhi under tight security.

Merchant, a resident of Mumbra, reportedly fled across the border following his release from jail on furlough — 14 days temporary release of prisoners.

Last month, the Bombay High Court had granted him furlough on condition that he would report to the police everyday.

He left Mumbra in the last week of April telling his family that he is going to get his furlough extended.
