Lal Maharaj had been leading a secluded life for more than 50 years at Saiji village, 30 kms from Guna. The baba revealed his “identity” just before his death to former sarpanch of the village Ganjendra Singh Raghuvanshi.

Villagers cremated Lalji Baba at a spot he had selected. The baba had told a villager a fortnight ago that he should be cremated at the spot.

According to Gajendra Singh, the baba revealed his identity when he was being brought back to the village after treatment. In fact he had urged Gajendra not to disclose it, saying “the village would be flooded with people” if it was made public. Before his death, he handed over his prized books to Gajendra to keep them safe.

Among the possessions of the baba, books on Buddha’s messages, several old train and bus tickets have been obtained from the ashram where he lived.

The baba would often go to Delhi and on return he would get down from the vehicle at a distance from the village, apparently to keep it secret, said Gajendra.
