Gunfight erupts in Valley at year-end

The gun-battle occurrs after Army, BSF and SOG jointly lays siege around three localities, reports Rashid Ahmed.

A fierce gunfight between security forces and terrorists has erupted at northern apple town of Sopore on Sunday evening. Police said that the clash was on and three terrorists are believed to have been holed up in the town.

The gun-battle occurred after Army, BSF and SOG jointly laid siege around three localities-Muslim Peer, Baba Yousuf Mohallah and main market around 3pm after specific information about the presence of terrorists in the town, and launched a search operation to flush out the terrorists. Defence spokesperson Lt Col AK Mathur said that militants opened fire upon search party, which led a heavy exchange of firing for about an hour.

The spokesperson said that the siege has been tightened and all exit and entry routes have been plugged. He said that the operation however has been suspended till next morning. "The operation would be resumed tomorrow", he said.

A police spokesperson said that three terrorists have been holed up in the besieged area.

Local residents, who could be reached on phone, said that intermittent firing was still going on. They said that most of residents in the besieged area have run for safety to other localities.
