The Millennium City's public transport system got a major shot in the arm on Saturday with a fleet of 36 new buses hitting city roads.The long-awaited bus service was launched by Haryana transport department's director general Arun Kumar.
Among the 36 buses, 15 are air-conditioned. Besides these intra-city vehicles, five super-luxury Volvo buses were also introduced on the Gurgaon-Delhi-Chandigarh route. "The city needs a sound public transport system. Looking into this aspect, the state government has started 36 buses. Gradually, we will add more buses to the fleet as per requirement. The state government has decided to raise the number of these buses to 100 in the near future," said Kumar. The buses will ply on city roads from 6 am to 11 pm. The fares have been fixed at Rs 5, R10 and Rs 15 for distance up to 8 km, 16 km and 24 km respectively.
For AC buses, the fares have been fixed at Rs 10, Rs 15 and Rs 20 for distance up to 10 km, 15 km and 20 km respectively.
"These buses will run on four routes and the frequency will be every 10 minutes. When the number will be raised to 100, these buses will ply on 11 routes," said Kumar. The first route is a 15-km stretch from Gurgaon bus stand-Iffco Chowk-MG Road-Sikanderpur Metro Station-Bristol Hotel-Genpact building-Kendriya Vihar and back. Buses on this route will make 80 rounds each day. The second route covers a 54-km distance from Manesar to Karol Bagh in Delhi. The buses will make 40 rounds per day on this route, which is also the longest of the four. The third is a 10-km distance from Gurgaon Railway Station-Mahavir Chowk-Maharana Pratap Chowk-Signature Tower-Huda City Centre Metro Station.
