A feasibility study conducted for launching intra-bus services in the town, by a private sector company, has warned that the population in Gurgaon is rising at an alarming pace and would touch 58 lakh-mark in the year 2031, from the existing 25 lakh.
Similar is the case with the number of vehicles, with traffic at the Gurgaon Expressway and MG Road expected to reach its capacity by 2012 and 2015, respectively.
Conducted for Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), the study has revealed that lack of a public transport system had resulted in use of private vehicles to the tune of 90 per cent of the total volume.
The study has named Gurgaon as ‘the city of cars’, as it accounts for nearly 60-70 percent of the total vehicular volume.
The study strongly recommends an effective public mode of transport for a model shift towards public transport, with an immediate need of 400 buses.
It also advises private sector participation, in addition to expansion of metro rail network, construction of elevated roads, grade separators and slip roads.
According to the findings of the study, the population of Gurgaon would be 26.35 lakh in 2011, 43.30 lakh in 2021 and 58.34 lakh in 2031, because of combined effects of urbanisation, commercialisation and industrialisation.

{{/usCountry}}At present, an average of 5.27 lakh vehicles of all types ply daily on all major roads in Gurgaon.
And the number is currently growing at the rate of 8.9 percent. However, the number of vehicles plying in Gurgaon is going to increase at the rate of 12 percent by 2015 and 15 percent by 2026.
It says that traffic intensity on National Highway No. 8 (Gurgaon Expressway) at 24 km toll plaza and MG Road has exceeded its service volume.
“Currently, the traffic volume at the 24 km milestone on NH-8 is at 80 percent of the absolute capacity, which implies that NH8 near Delhi border is operating at the level of service (LOS),” the study stated.
“During peak hours, the speed on this stretch is in the range of 30-50 km/per hour and it will go down drastically in the next few years. The traffic on NH-8 at this point is increasing at 12 percent per annum and will reach its capacity by 2012,” it added.
The traffic flow condition at 42 milestone on NH-8 is expected to be higher due to growth of Manesar, development of new sectors between Manesar and Gurgaon, including special economic zones (SEZs) and because of proposed Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway. Traffic here would reach its capacity by 2017.
On other major roads --Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, being upgraded to 4-lane on BOT basis, the study stated the current growth of traffic volume on this road was 10 percent and would reach its capacity by 2028.
