The Rajasthan government on Tuesday moved to resolve the standoff with Gurjars demanding reservation in government jobs, even as protesters laid siege to railway tracks and disrupted services between Delhi and Mumbai.
Agitators blocked the track at Peelupura village in Bharatpur, forcing the diversion of 26 trains. Six other trains were cancelled and another six partially cancelled. At Kota junction, passengers had to wait for hours. Trains meant to pass through Bharatpur have been diverted through Mathura and Agra.
Only one train from Jaipur to Bayana in Bharatpur was partially cancelled due to the agitation. Other trains passing through Jaipur were running normally, railways public relations officer Lalit Bohra said.
Gurjar leader Col (retd) Kirori Singh Bainsala said the stir that began Monday, would continue until their demand was met. “Naxal tendencies will take root,” he added.
The government has started talks to resolve the issue. “We will soon find a solution,” chief minister Ashok Gehlot said in Kishangarh.
In 2008, the then BJP government announced 5% quota for Gurjars and 14% for economically backward classes, taking the total reservations to 68%. The high court stayed the quota in October 2009, as it exceeded the 50% cap.

{{/usCountry}}Bainsala reached an agreement with the new Congress government in May, under which 1% quota for Gurjars was provided within the 50% quota in the special BC category.
The HC high court is set to hear the matter on the remaining 4% quota on Wednesday. State energy minister Jitendra Singh said the government will submit the Tamil Nadu model of 69% reservation in the court to strengthen its case.
