Heavily armed with guns and bombs even in the presence of the police, Lala Haddi’s supporters stoned vehicles and publicly vowed to avenge his murder.
The police, however, couldn’t muster the courage to disperse the enraged mob on the VIP road for several hours. Lala Haddi Godam, a notorious criminal, was shot by three miscreants outside his house in Dalelpurwa last week. He was rushed to Lucknow when his condition deteriorated on Friday but he died on the way.
On Saturday, his supporters gathered at Merchant Chambers crossing with the demand that Lala’s body should be handed over to them for the last rites. When his body was brought in a vehicle, his supporters became furious and entered the vehicle. Several women fell from the vehicle as the police tried to divert it straight to Bhairon Ghat for cremation.
The protest was so intense that the administration had to stop the vehicle at Merchant Chambers crossing, allowing people and relatives to get the last glimpse of Lala Haddi Godam. The crowd was adamant on carrying the body on their shoulders and on this the mob and the police had several rounds of confrontation. Finally, the administration succeeded in sending the body to Bhairon Ghat in the vehicle, after somehow persuading the agitated crowd.
Meanwhile, a heavy police contigent has been deployed in Haddi Godam area to prevent any backlash.
Case filed against SI, 3 cops
A CASE has been registered against a police sub-inspector and three constables for taking bribe from a person to release his brothers. On Saturday, the Nazirabad police registered a case against SI Ratan Singh and three constables Shyam Singh, Har Govind and Ashok Kumar. The case has been registered by Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi, who in his application stated that the four cops on July 22 had entangled his brothers, Dilip and Pradeep, students of BA and Intermediate respectively, in the fake charges and demanded Rs 10,000 for their release.
