Renuka Deshmukh, a second year BSc student in a local college, has been arrested for killing Bhojraj Sahu, 26.

The incident follows a spurt in crimes against women in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Police said Sahu, a local trader and a friend of Deshmukh's brother-in-law, had proposed marriage and was spurned.

But he continued harassing her even after his marriage. In March, police arrested Sahu on Deshmukh’s complaint. But he was later released on bail.

On Sunday afternoon, a drunk Sahu followed Deshmukh as she left home and asked her again to marry him. When she refused, Sahu abused and assaulted her, RL Prajapati, superintendent of police, Betul, told HT.

“Enraged, she kicked him in the groin and when he fell, hit him with a stone,” said Abid Ali Amir, sub-divisional police officer, Multai.

“Sahu tried to escape, but she hit him repeatedly with a stick till he died.”

“The girl had a relationship with my brother and was blackmailing him,” said Ajay, Sahu’s brother. “Her brother and brother-in-law were involved in the murder.”
