Director Quashiq Mukherjee, who prefers calling himself Q, made headlines when his film, Gandu, was stopped from being screened in theatres across the country. The black-and-white movie apparently didn’t sit well with the Indian audiences because of the shocking name, the use of expletives and bold representations of sex. Talking about it, Q says, “The name did cause trouble.”

However, the film won him the Jury Award for Best Director and Best Film at the South Asian International Film Festival, 2010. Q says, “I didn’t make the film to create a sensation but simply wanted to tell a story. Our target was never the Indian audience as we wanted to reach out to the world market. And honestly, the movie has got nothing to do with India.”

He adds, “I hope I never make a Bollywood movie. I didn’t set out to make Bollywood movies. I’ve nothing against them, but neither do I have any interest in them. I don’t even watch Bollywood films. My passion lies in world cinema,” He adds, “I’m intrigued by movies made post the ’90s. I am interested in cinema which is extreme, where filmmakers have a certain radical style of filmmaking. Sadly, India isn’t well exposed to such movies. And personally, I want to make films where I can do what I want to and the way I want to.”
