HC admits Binayak Sen’s appeal, hearing on Jan 24

The Chhattisgarh High court admitting the appeal of rights activist Dr Binayak Sen today had fixed January 24 for the hearing onhis application on suspension of the life sentence and grant of bail.

The Chhattisgarh High court admitting the appeal of rights activist Dr Binayak Sen on Friday had fixed January 24 for the hearing onhis application on suspension of the life sentence and grant of bail.

The appeal challenges the grounds of judgment of the trial court that convicted Sen, also a doctor by profession. The sessions court in Raipur on December 24 held Dr Sen (60) guilty along with Maoist ideologue Narayan Sanyal (72) and businessman Pijush Guha (36) of conspiracy on sedition and assisting the Maoists.

After the trial court judgment the trio are lodged in Raipur central jail. Sen has moved High court challenging his conviction by the lower court.

Sen’s counsel Mahendra Dubey told Hindustan Times that the division bench of Justice T P Sharma and Justice R L Jhanwar admitted the appeal of Dr Binayak Sen and has called the records of the trial court.

“The High court will hear the plea on January 24 against the sedition charges and life imprisonment of Dr Binayak Sen awarded by the trial court, along with the appeal on his bail application”, Dubey said.
