HC notice to jail officials on Pappu Yadav

The Bench issued the notice to the Director General (prisons) asking him to submit the relevant details and records to the court.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a "sting operation," the Delhi High Court has directed the prison authorities to furnish in the court all records pertaining to the alleged "VIP treatment" being extended to undertrial prisoner and RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav in the Capital's high security Tihar Jail.

A division Bench of Justice Manmohan Sarin and Manju Goel also sought specific details pertaining to an alleged extravagant cultural evening hosted by the undertrial MP on September 7, 2005 during which liquor and food had flown freely, as alleged in a newspaper report.

The Bench issued the notice to the Director General (prisons) asking him to submit the relevant details and records to the court while posting the matter to March 30.

The directions were issued by the bench, which took suo motu cognisance of the reports that the MP despite being lodged in the Tihar Jail was enjoying all comforts and facilities befitting a VVIP.

It was alleged that Yadav who is facing charges in several criminal cases in Bihar had free access to cell phones, liquor, unrestricted food, TV and visitors in the jail.
