Observing that it was pained to note the barbaric attack on a first year management student of a Coimbatore college in a ragging incident in March last, the Madras High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a senior student, an accused in the case.
Granting bail 'will open the floodgates setting a very bad precedent and allow like minded persons to indulge in such unforgivable crime,' Justice R Regupathi held yesterday, rejecting the application of Arjun Radhakrishnan, a second year student of the PSG College of Arts and Science.
In the name of ragging, some students had caused serious injury, indicating their characters could not be shaped even with education and knowledge gained as students, he said.
Akil, the victim, was brutally attacked by the petitioner and others on Mar 7 resulting in severe injury to eyes and damage to spinal cord. A case was registered under the Tamil Nadu Probhition of Ragging Act and various IPC sections.
Noting the submission made by the government advocate that sufficient material had been collected so far to proceed against the accused, the Judge said the court could not appreciate 'the loose aproach of the college administration in exonerating the petitioner and co-accused'.
Senior students had the responsibility to guide juniors and treat them as friends and brothers, the Judge said, adding if an environment, as in the present case, was allowed to prevail in educational institutions it would have an adverse impact on the relationship amongst students and maintenance of good educational system based on morality and ethics.
