Madras High Court bench in Madurai on Thursday stayed proceedings in an attempt to murder case filed against DMDK leader Vijaykanth following a clash between his lawyers and others when he appeared in a court in Kanyakumari in July.
Passing interim orders on a petition by Vijaykanth seeking to quash the FIR which charged him with attempt to murder a government advocate in the District and Sessions Court, justice CT Selvam stayed all the proceedings in the case, filed on a complaint by public prosecutor A Gnanasekaran.
The actor-turned-politician, who is the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, said the case was purely politically motivated and abuse of the process of law and liable to be quashed. He also sought a stay.
The FIR also levelled charges criminal intimidation among others against Vijaykanth, whose lawyers lawyers allegedly clashed with other advocates, including Gnanasekaran, in the Kanyakumari court on July 1.
The incident occurred when he appeared in connection with a defamation case filed against him by the state government for allegedly making defamatory statements against chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Vijaykanth contended that he did not do any act that resulted in assault or using criminal force to deter the advocate from discharging his duty.
